Introducing LibraryLink: Helping Libraries generate revenue from their deaccessioned materials.

Why Library Weeding Matters

Professional Library Book Weeding Services

Regular weeding is essential for a healthy library collection. Outdated, damaged, or low-circulation materials take up valuable shelf space, make it harder for patrons to find relevant resources, and can even pose preservation risks to surrounding items.

But the question every librarian faces is: what happens to the weeded books?

With Zoom Books LibraryLink, your deaccessioned materials are given a second life. Books with resale value are sold through our marketplace network, generating revenue for your library. Everything else is responsibly recycled through our certified paper recycling partners.

  • Free pickup from your facility — boxes or pallets
  • No sorting or scanning required (or opt into our Scanned Program for ISBN-level tracking)
  • Revenue payments or weight-based compensation
  • Detailed sustainability reports for stakeholders

A Librarian's Guide to Effective Weeding

When Should You Weed?

Most library professionals recommend weeding on a continuous basis rather than in large, disruptive batches. Common triggers include annual shelf reads, space renovations, collection shifts, post-book-sale cleanouts, and strategic collection development reviews.

The American Library Association recommends that libraries weed approximately 5% of their collection annually to maintain relevance and usability.

Common Weeding Criteria

Libraries commonly use the CREW (Continuous Review, Evaluation, and Weeding) method or the MUSTIE framework to evaluate materials for deaccession:

  • Misleading — factually inaccurate or outdated information
  • Ugly — worn, damaged, or unattractive condition
  • Superseded — replaced by a newer edition
  • Trivial — no longer relevant to the community
  • Irrelevant — outside the library's current collection scope
  • Elsewhere — easily available through ILL or digital access

What Happens After Weeding?

This is where most libraries face a gap. Weeded materials traditionally end up in dumpsters, donation bins, or book sales that generate minimal return for significant staff effort. Zoom Books LibraryLink closes that gap by providing a professional, revenue-generating, environmentally responsible destination for every weeded item.

Library Book Weeding FAQ

How much does the weeding pickup service cost?

There is no cost for pickup. Zoom Books LibraryLink provides free logistics coordination and pickup for qualifying volumes (minimum 3 boxes). We generate revenue from resold materials and share it with your library.

Do we need to sort or scan books before pickup?

Not for our Unscanned Program. Simply box your weeded materials and we handle the rest. If you prefer ISBN-level tracking and higher per-item returns, our Scanned Program offers that option.

What types of materials can you accept?

We accept hardcovers, paperbacks, textbooks, children's books, media (CDs, DVDs), and more. During your initial consultation, we'll discuss any special collections or unusual materials.

How often can we schedule pickups?

As often as you need. Many libraries schedule monthly or quarterly pickups aligned with their weeding cycles. We also handle one-time large projects like renovation cleanouts.

What happens to books that can't be resold?

All non-resalable materials are processed through our certified paper recycling partners. Nothing goes to landfill. You'll receive a sustainability report documenting the environmental impact.

Do you work with academic libraries?

Yes. We partner with public, academic, and special libraries across North America. Academic libraries often benefit from our ability to handle large-scale deaccession projects involving thousands of volumes.
